Dreams + Challenges Go Together

Many years ago, my husband endured health challenges that kept him bed ridden for nearly two years.

It was an incredibly hard season and we weren’t sure how things would pan out.

But we started dreaming together and imagined a future where we could be active and adventurous as a family.

We dreamed of one day getting an RV, packing up our two boys and exploring.

We planned, worked and saved so that our dream of getting an RV would come to fruition.

We finally got our RV two months ago.

It’s beautiful and we were excited to take it on its maiden voyage.

That trip was this past weekend.

And…it was completely opposite of what we dreamed of.

For starters, when we were two miles away from our campground, there was a driver (my guess is he was drunk), who was heading straight towards us in our lane! Thank God my husband swerved out of the way as quickly as he could, so the drunk driver missed us, but he hit the tail end of our RV and kept on driving.

Then a day into our trip, the toilet broke and flooded the inside of our RV.

We left our first trip with a long list of things that need to be fixed that will likely cost thousands of dollars.

To say that this weekend was full of challenges is an understatement.

Our dream of traveling as a family in an RV was met with challenge after challenge.

Dreams are sometimes like that.

In fact, dreams and challenges often go hand in hand.

Like your photography business. Perhaps you dream of being fully booked, quitting the day job you don’t love and creating a thriving and sustainable business.

That’s an amazing dream.

But understand that dreams, all dreams, will encounter challenges as you pursue (and even achieve) them.

And when you do encounter challenges, it doesn’t mean the dream wasn’t worth it or should be given up on.

You learn and grow through the challenges.

My husband and I learned a lot on this past weekends RV trip.

Perhaps we were looking at our RV dream through rose colored glasses (we are not now).

We still have the dream of taking our boys and traveling and because of the challenges we faced this past weekend, we are better equipped to sustain our dream over the long haul.

Your challenges getting booked are not a sign that your dream business is too far fetched. Rather the challenges you are facing are equipping you so that you can sustain your business over time (if you don’t give up).

So this is a little reminder to not give up on your dream. Even if you are met with hard, frustrating and unexpected challenges along the way, your dream is still worth pursuing.

Take one day at a time. Learn as you go. Be thankful for what you do have. And enjoy the journey.
